Trance

A trance is a divinely-induced state of altered consciousness in which a person receives spiritual visions or revelations from God. Biblical trances were experienced by prophets and apostles as means of divine communication.

Overview

Throughout Scripture, trances represent supernatural states in which God communicates directly with His servants, suspending normal consciousness to reveal spiritual truth. These experiences were granted to prophets and apostles as authentic means of divine revelation, distinct from human imagination or demonic deception.

Key Scriptures

"The oracle of Balaam son of Beor, the oracle of one whose eye is opened, the oracle of one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened" (Numbers 24:4, NIV).

"The oracle of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened" (Numbers 24:16, NIV).

"I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision" (Acts 10:10a, ESV).

Application

While God primarily reveals Himself today through Scripture, understanding biblical trances helps us recognize God's sovereignty over spiritual experiences and discern authentic divine communication from deception.
