Tiglath-Pileser

Tiglath-Pileser III was an Assyrian king who conquered Israel and Syria during the 8th century BC, serving as God's instrument of judgment against unfaithful kingdoms.

Overview

Tiglath-Pileser III (also called Pul) was a powerful Assyrian monarch who conquered numerous kingdoms in the ancient Near East. King Ahaz of Judah sought his military assistance against the northern kingdom of Israel and Syria, but at great cost. Tiglath-Pileser's campaigns resulted in the deportation of Israeli tribes and the weakening of Judah's independence, illustrating how worldly alliances often fail and incur God's displeasure.

Key Scriptures

"So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria, saying, 'I am your servant and your son. Come up and rescue me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who are attacking me'" (2 Kings 16:7, ESV).

"The LORD brought low the people of Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had made Judah act sinfully and had been very unfaithful to the LORD" (2 Chronicles 28:19, ESV).

Application

Trust in God's protection rather than seeking security through worldly alliances that compromise faith and obedience.
