Talebearer

A talebearer is someone who spreads rumors, gossip, and slander, damaging relationships and community. Scripture consistently warns against this destructive behavior and commands believers to guard their speech.

Overview

Talebearing—sharing secrets, rumors, or divisive information about others—is repeatedly condemned throughout Scripture as a serious sin. It destroys trust, fractures relationships, and tears apart the fabric of community. God calls His people to integrity and discretion in speech, protecting others' reputations rather than exposing their faults.

Key Scriptures

"Lord, who shall dwell in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart; who does not slander with his tongue." (Psalm 15:1-3, ESV)

"For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases." (Proverbs 26:20, ESV)

"Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a babbler." (Proverbs 20:19, ESV)

Application

Guard your words carefully by refusing to spread rumors or secrets, remembering that faithful love covers offenses rather than exposing them.
