Overview
Wormwood is a bitter plant used throughout Scripture as a symbol of divine judgment, spiritual corruption, and the bitter fruit of sin. The term represents God's displeasure with idolatry, unfaithfulness, and rebellion. In Revelation, wormwood becomes a sign of future judgment during the end times.
Key Scriptures
"Beware lest there is among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there is among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit" (Deuteronomy 29:18, ESV).
"For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword" (Proverbs 5:3-4, ESV).
"The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water—the name of the star is Wormwood" (Revelation 8:10-11, NIV).
Application
Recognize that persistent sin and rejection of God's Word lead to bitterness and judgment; turn from idolatry and unfaithfulness to experience God's blessing instead.
