Renting

While the Bible does not directly address modern rental practices, it provides principles of stewardship, honesty, and fair dealing that apply to landlord-tenant relationships. Biblical examples of renting property illustrate the importance of fulfilling agreements and treating others justly.

Overview

Scripture contains limited direct teaching on renting, but includes examples of property rental and principles governing economic relationships. The parable of the tenants (Matthew 21, Luke 20) illustrates accountability for rented property, while Acts 28:30 shows Paul renting living quarters. These passages underscore that all property ultimately belongs to God and we are stewards responsible to Him.

Key Scriptures

"And he rented a house and lived there two full years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him" (Acts 28:30, ESV).

"A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, then went into another country" (Matthew 21:33, ESV).

"And when the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit" (Matthew 21:34, ESV).

Application

Christians should approach renting agreements with integrity, paying promptly and maintaining properties as faithful stewards, recognizing that honest dealings reflect Christ's character.
