Priest

In the Old Testament, priests served as mediators between God and Israel, but the New Testament reveals that all believers in Christ are now part of a royal priesthood, having direct access to God through Jesus.

Overview

The priesthood in Scripture evolved from a designated Levitical order in the Old Testament to a universal calling for all believers. Under the old covenant, priests like Jethro's descendants (Exodus 2:16) performed sacrificial duties and intercession. However, Christ's sacrifice ended the need for earthly priests, and believers now enjoy direct access to God as members of His holy priesthood.

Key Scriptures

"Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation" (Exodus 19:6, ESV).

"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9, ESV).

"And you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth" (Revelation 5:10, ESV).

Application

Recognize your identity as a priest before God through Christ, exercising your privilege of intercession and worship in daily life.
