Overview
The Bible prohibits making carved images or pictures for worship purposes, as these constitute idolatry that violates God's command to worship Him alone. However, Scripture does not forbid all artistic representation, as God Himself commissioned skilled craftsmen to create artistic works in the tabernacle. The key distinction lies in the intent and use: pictures become sinful when they become objects of worship or lead people away from exclusive devotion to God.
Key Scriptures
"You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up an engraved stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God" (Leviticus 26:1, ESV).
"You shall destroy all their figured stones and cast all their metal images into the fire and burn all their wooden Asherim" (Numbers 33:52, ESV).
"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver" (Proverbs 25:11, ESV).
Application
Examine your heart regarding any images or pictures in your life to ensure they draw you closer to God rather than becoming objects of misplaced devotion.
