Overview
The Nazarite vow was a special consecration to God outlined in Numbers 6. Anyone—man or woman—could make this commitment for a designated period, though some like Samson and John the Baptist were Nazarites from birth. The vow required abstaining from wine and strong drink, leaving hair uncut, and avoiding contact with corpses, symbolizing complete dedication to the Lord.
Key Scriptures
"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'If a man or woman wants to make a special vow, a vow of separation to the LORD as a Nazarite' (Numbers 6:2, NIV). "They must not drink wine or other fermented drink and must not eat anything unclean" (Numbers 6:3, NIV). "During the entire period of their vow of separation no razor may be used on their head" (Numbers 6:5, NIV).
Application
Reflect on what it means to be wholly set apart for God's purposes in your own life, even when it requires distinctive sacrifice or separation from worldly practices.
