Overview
Mephaath was one of the cities designated as a possession for the Levites in the Old Testament. Located in the territory of Reuben, east of the Jordan River, it served as both a residential city for the priestly tribe of Levi and a city of refuge. The city appears in historical and prophetic records throughout Scripture.
Key Scriptures
"And out of the tribe of Reuben: Bezer with its pasturelands, Jahaz with its pasturelands, Kedemoth with its pasturelands, and Mephaath with its pasturelands" (Joshua 13:18, ESV).
"And to the sons of Merari by their clans were allotted twelve cities out of the tribe of Reuben and the tribe of Gad and the tribe of Zebulun" (1 Chronicles 6:73, ESV), with Mephaath included among these assignments.
"Judgment has come upon the tableland, upon Holon, Jahzah, and Mephaath" (Jeremiah 48:21, ESV), referencing Moab's coming judgment.
Application
Mephaath reminds us that God provides specific places and purposes for His people, and that obedience in possessing and stewarding what He assigns brings blessing and order to His kingdom.
