Overview
Mashal was one of the forty-eight cities designated for the Levites under the Old Covenant system. Located within the tribal territory of Asher, it was specifically allocated to the Gershonite branch of the Levitical family. These cities served as residential centers for the Levites, who were set apart for priestly and tabernacle duties.
Key Scriptures
"And out of the tribe of Asher: Mishal with its pasturelands and Abdon with its pasturelands" (Joshua 21:30, ESV). "From the tribe of Asher: Mashal and its pasturelands, Abdon and its pasturelands" (1 Chronicles 6:74, ESV). Joshua 19:26 mentions Mashal in the boundary description of Asher's inheritance.
Application
The provision of cities for the Levites demonstrates God's faithful provision for those set apart for His service, reminding believers that the Lord sustains those dedicated to His kingdom work.
