Overview
Martha of Bethany was a devoted follower of Jesus who opened her home to Him. While her heart was earnest and her service genuine, Jesus gently corrected her tendency to become anxious and distracted by many tasks rather than focusing on what mattered most—sitting at His feet.
Key Scriptures
"Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus" (John 11:5, ESV). "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:41-42, ESV). "There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table" (John 12:2, ESV).
Application
Examine your own service and activities—are you so busy doing good works that you neglect time with God in prayer and His Word, or are you maintaining the essential priority of knowing Christ?
