Study Notes — Luke 10
8 sectionsLuke 10 presents Jesus sending seventy disciples on a missionary journey, establishing principles of gospel witness that remain relevant today. The chapter moves from the commissioning and work of these laborers (verses 1–24) to Jesus's teaching on true neighborliness through the parable of the Good Samaritan (verses 25–37), and concludes with the contrast between Martha's anxious service and Mary's devoted attention at Jesus's feet (verses 38–42). Together, these passages emphasize the priority of spiritual work, genuine compassion, and intimate communion with Christ over mere external activity.
Jesus appoints seventy disciples (or seventy-two in some manuscripts) and sends them ahead of Him in pairs. This is a significant expansion of His evangelistic force beyond the Twelve. The harvest metaphor in verse 2 reflects the urgent spiritual need: the work is vast, but workers are scarce. Jesus instructs them to pray that God will send more laborers—a reminder that evangelism begins with intercession. In verses 3–5, Jesus prepares them for hardship: they will go as vulnerable as lambs among wolves, stripped of financial security (no purse or provisions), and must greet potential hosts with the blessing of peace. This radical dependence reflects both the urgency of their mission and trust in God's provision.
The disciples are to discern whether a household is receptive ("if the son of peace be there," verse 6). Those who welcome them deserve support—"the labourer is worthy of his hire" (verse 7)—a principle Paul later applies to church leaders (1 Timothy 5:18). Significantly, they are not to move restlessly from house to house seeking better accommodations. Cities that reject the disciples' message face severe judgment (verses 10–12). Jesus instructs them to wipe dust from their feet as a testimony against rejection, and warns that such cities will face judgment worse than Sodom. This severity underscores the weightiness of rejecting Christ's messengers and His kingdom announcement.
Jesus pronounces woes upon Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum—cities that had witnessed His mighty works yet refused repentance. Even pagan cities like Tyre and Sidon would have repented under such evidence (verse 13). Capernaum, exalted by its privilege of hosting Jesus, faces the darkest judgment of all. Verse 16 provides crucial encouragement: "He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me." The disciples' authority is Christ's authority; their rejection is His rejection. This binds the disciples intimately to their Master's mission and vindication.
The seventy return with joy, amazed that demons submit to Jesus's name (verse 17). Jesus responds by revealing a vision of Satan's fall (verse 18) and grants them authority over all enemy powers (verse 19). Yet He redirects their rejoicing: do not celebrate demonic subjection, but rather that your names are written in heaven (verse 20). This is pastoral wisdom—the greatest joy is not miraculous power, but assurance of salvation and eternity with God.
Jesus Himself rejoices, thanking the Father that spiritual truths are revealed to the humble ("babes") rather than the self-wise (verse 21). His declaration in verse 22 asserts His exclusive intimacy with the Father and mediating role. The disciples are blessed to witness what prophets and kings longed to see (verses 23–24)—the kingdom breaking into history through Jesus's person and work.
A lawyer tests Jesus with the question of eternal life. Jesus redirects him to the law itself: love God completely and love your neighbor as yourself (verses 26–27). When the lawyer asks, "Who is my neighbour?" Jesus responds with the parable of the Good Samaritan. A priest and Levite—religious professionals—pass by a wounded man. A Samaritan (despised by Jews) shows compassion, binds wounds, provides care, and promises reimbursement (verses 30–35). True neighborliness transcends ethnicity and social status; it is defined by mercy and costly action (verse 37).
In Martha's home, Mary sits at Jesus's feet listening to His teaching while Martha fusses over hospitality. Martha's complaint exposes anxious preoccupation. Jesus gently corrects her: "One thing is needful." Mary has chosen the better part—intimate communion with Christ through His word. Service matters, but intimacy with Jesus takes priority.
Luke 10 calls us to prayerful evangelism, to radical trust in God's provision, to recognize Christ's authority in witness, to prioritize souls over religious externals, and to measure success not by signs and wonders but by assurance in Christ. Most importantly, we are reminded that sitting at Jesus's feet, absorbing His word, and cher
