Manna

Manna was the supernatural bread God provided to sustain Israel in the wilderness, serving as a historical prefigurement of Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life who satisfies our deepest spiritual hunger.

Overview

God miraculously provided manna—bread from heaven—to feed the Israelites during their 40 years in the wilderness (Exodus 16:4). This daily provision demonstrated God's faithfulness and care for His people. In the New Testament, Jesus explicitly identifies Himself as the fulfillment of this Old Testament type, declaring that He is the true Bread of Life who gives eternal sustenance to all who believe in Him.

Key Scriptures

"Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you'" (Exodus 16:4, ESV). Jesus said, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever" (John 6:51, ESV). "Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died" (John 6:49, ESV), contrasting temporal provision with eternal salvation.

Application

Just as Israel depended on daily manna, believers must daily feed on Christ through His Word and depend upon His sustaining grace for spiritual life and growth.
