Overview
From creation's first day when God spoke light into existence, Scripture establishes light as a symbol of God's presence and goodness. Throughout the Bible, light represents truth, holiness, and divine guidance, while darkness symbolizes sin and separation from God. Jesus fulfills this imagery as the incarnate Light who came to illuminate humanity's spiritual condition and offer redemption.
Key Scriptures
"And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light" (Genesis 1:3, ESV). "The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned" (Isaiah 60:2, ESV). "In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:4-5, ESV). "I have come into the world as light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness" (John 12:46, NIV).
Application
As believers transformed by Christ's light, we are called to walk in truth and let our lives visibly reflect God's character to a watching world.
