Firstborn

The firstborn held special significance in Israel's covenant community, consecrated to the Lord and set apart for His service. God established the Levites as a substitute for all the firstborn males of Israel.

Overview

In Old Testament law, the firstborn son was dedicated to God as holy and set apart for His purposes. When God delivered Israel from Egypt, He claimed the firstborn of both man and beast, establishing this principle throughout their generations. The Levites were later appointed by God as a substitute for all Israel's firstborn males.

Key Scriptures

"Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine" (Exodus 13:2, ESV).

"And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the people of Israel instead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the people of Israel. The Levites shall be mine'" (Numbers 3:40-41, ESV).

"You shall not delay to offer from the fullness of your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me" (Exodus 22:29, ESV).

Application

Recognize that what we offer first to God—our firstfruits in time, resources, and devotion—demonstrates our faith and priority in honoring Him.
