Overview
Ethiopia (ancient Cush) is mentioned throughout Scripture as a significant African nation. King Asa of Judah faced a massive Ethiopian invasion under Zerah but experienced miraculous deliverance through faith in God. Isaiah also pronounced God's judgment against Ethiopian pride and self-sufficiency, calling the nation to recognize the Lord's authority over all peoples.
Key Scriptures
"Zerah the Cushite marched out against them with an army of a million men and 300 chariots, and came to Mareshah" (2 Chronicles 14:9, ESV). "Then Asa cried out to the Lord his God: 'Lord, there is no one like you to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude'" (2 Chronicles 14:11, ESV). "So the Lord defeated the Cushites before Asa and before Judah, and the Cushites fled" (2 Chronicles 14:12, ESV). "Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia" (Isaiah 18:1, NASB).
