Ephron

Ephron was a Hittite who sold the cave of Machpelah to Abraham for Sarah's burial, establishing the first inherited possession of the Promised Land for God's people.

Overview

Ephron the Hittite owned land at Machpelah near Hebron during Abraham's time in Canaan. When Sarah died, Abraham sought to purchase a burial place, and Ephron offered his field and cave. Though Ephron initially presented the land as a gift, Abraham insisted on paying the full price of 400 shekels of silver, establishing a legitimate transaction and legal ownership of the property.

Key Scriptures

"Abraham rose and bowed to the Hittites, the people of the land. And he said to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, 'If you will listen to me, I will give the price of the field. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there.'" (Genesis 23:12, ESV)

"So the field of Ephron in Machpelah, which was to the east of Mamre, the field and the cave that was in it and all the trees that were in the field, throughout its whole extent, was made over to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the Hittites, before all who went in at the gate of his city." (Genesis 23:17, ESV)

Application

Abraham's honorable negotiation with Ephron demonstrates the importance of conducting business with integrity and ensuring legal clarity in important transactions.
