Overview
Shibmah was a Moabite city located east of the Jordan River that became an Israelite possession. The city was notable for its abundant vineyards and wine production, which made it a place of agricultural wealth and prosperity in biblical times.
Key Scriptures
"The sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim, as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (their names being changed) and Sibmah, and they gave other names to the cities which they built" (Numbers 32:37-38, NASB).
Isaiah later mourned Shibmah's destruction: "I weep for you, as Jazer weeps, O vine of Sibmah; your branches spread as far as the sea; they reach as far as the sea of Jazer" (Isaiah 16:8-9, NIV).
Application
Remember that earthly prosperity and flourishing cities ultimately depend on God's sovereignty, and we should place our trust in His eternal kingdom rather than temporal wealth.
