Uel

1 scripture reference — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Uel was among the sons of Bani who had taken foreign wives during the Babylonian exile. When Ezra discovered this violation of God's covenant law, he led the people in confession and repentance, calling them to put away their foreign wives to restore their relationship with the Lord and maintain Israel's distinctive calling.

Key Scriptures

"And of the sons of Bani: Maaseiah, Matteniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh. Of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah. Of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei. Of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel" (Ezra 10:34, ESV).

"You have broken faith and taken foreign wives, and so increased the guilt of Israel" (Ezra 10:10, ESV).

Application

Uel's obedience to separate from unbelieving relationships challenges modern believers to prioritize covenant faithfulness over personal desires, particularly regarding marriage and close associations.
