Uncleanness

38 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

The concept of uncleanness in Leviticus encompasses both ritual impurity (contact with dead bodies, certain animals, or bodily discharges) and moral corruption. These distinctions were foundational to Israel's covenant relationship with God, emphasizing that holiness requires separation from defilement. Priests held heightened standards of purity since they ministered before the Lord.

Key Scriptures

"Whoever touches the carcass of any unclean animal shall be unclean until the evening" (Leviticus 5:2, ESV). "The priest shall make atonement for him before the LORD for his uncleanness" (Leviticus 5:3, ESV). "If anyone eats of the meat of the peace offering that belongs to the LORD while he is unclean, that person shall be cut off from his people" (Leviticus 7:20, ESV). "A priest shall not make himself unclean...except for his closest relatives" (Leviticus 21:2-3, ESV).

Application

While Christians are freed from ceremonial laws through Christ's fulfillment, we should reflect on how uncleanness symbolizes sin's separating power and appreciate the holiness Jesus requires of His followers.
