Unction, Figurative

2 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

In Scripture, unction (anointing) is used figuratively to describe the work of the Holy Spirit in believers' lives. Just as kings and priests were physically anointed with oil in the Old Testament as a sign of God's choice and empowerment, all Christians receive a spiritual anointing—the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit that sets them apart for God's purposes and equips them with divine wisdom.

Key Scriptures

"But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth" (1 John 2:20, NIV).

"As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him" (1 John 2:27, NIV).

Application

Believers can trust that the Holy Spirit within them provides spiritual discernment and truth-teaching, enabling them to recognize false doctrine and grow in godliness without relying solely on external teachers.
