2 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Tanhumeth the Netophathite was a commander of forces in Judah following the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. After Nebuchadnezzar appointed Gedaliah as governor over the remnant, Tanhumeth and other military leaders came to pledge their support and protection of the land under Babylonian rule.

Key Scriptures

"When all the captains of the armies that were in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam as governor, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah: Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men." (2 Kings 25:23, ESV)

"Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, came near and said to Jeremiah the prophet, 'Let our plea for mercy come before you, and pray to the Lord your God for us...that the Lord your God may show us the way we should go and the thing we should do.'" (Jeremiah 40:8, ESV)

Application

Tanhumeth's example shows how believers should seek wise counsel and cooperation during times of national upheaval and uncertainty.
