Sacrilege

4 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Sacrilege involves treating holy things, God's name, or His temple with irreverence or contempt. The Bible portrays sacrilege as a violation of God's holiness and a serious spiritual offense that brings judgment. It includes both deliberate desecration and careless irreverence toward what God has set apart as sacred.

Key Scriptures

"Anyone who eats it will be held responsible; he has desecrated what is holy to the Lord" (Leviticus 19:8, NIV). "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person; for God's temple is sacred, and you together are that temple" (1 Corinthians 3:16-17, NIV). "They are ruined by greed and exploit others for shameful gain" (Titus 1:11a, ESV). "Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve" (1 Peter 5:2, NIV).

Application

Guard against treating God's Word, His house, or His name irreverently in daily speech and conduct, honoring Him through respectful devotion.
