Overview
Poetry appears throughout Scripture as a medium for worship, wisdom, and communication. God's Word itself employs poetic language in the Psalms, Song of Solomon, and prophetic books. However, the Bible also warns that poets may promote false philosophies or ungodly ideas, requiring discernment about the content of their words rather than their craft.
Key Scriptures
"As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.'" (Acts 17:28, ESV) - Paul quotes pagan poets to connect with Athenian audiences while redirecting them to truth about God.
"One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, 'Cretans are always liars'" (Titus 1:12, ESV) - Paul references a Cretan poet to illustrate how even non-Christian sources sometimes speak truth, though their overall worldview may be false.
Application
Evaluate all communication—whether poetic or prose—by its alignment with Scripture rather than its eloquence or popularity.
