Nettles

5 scripture references across 2 subtopics — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Nettles were common weeds in biblical lands that grew in neglected, uncultivated places. Scripture uses them metaphorically to depict spiritual decline, judgment, and the ruin that follows when diligence is abandoned or God's discipline is executed.

Key Scriptures

"I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense; thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins." (Proverbs 24:30–31, NIV)

"Thorns will overrun her citadels, nettles and brambles her fortresses. She will become a haunt for jackals, a home for owls." (Isaiah 34:13, NIV)

"Among the bushes they huddled, under the nettles they were huddled together." (Job 30:7, ESV)

Application

Just as nettles choke a neglected field, spiritual complacency and unaddressed sin overtake the heart; believers must cultivate diligence in prayer, Scripture study, and obedience to prevent spiritual desolation.
