Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz

4 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

The Lord commanded the prophet Isaiah to name his son Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz as a sign to the people of Judah. This unusual name served as a living prophecy that before the child could speak, the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria would be carried away by the king of Assyria. The child became a tangible reminder of God's coming judgment and His sovereignty over nations.

Key Scriptures

"Moreover the LORD said to me, 'Take a large tablet and write on it with a man's pen concerning Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.'" (Isaiah 8:1, NASB)

"So I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the LORD said to me, 'Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz; for before the boy knows how to cry out "My father" or "My mother," the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.'" (Isaiah 8:3-4, NASB)

Application

God uses all means, including His servants' own families, to communicate His truth and purposes to His people, calling us to trust His prophetic word even when His plans seem incomprehensible.
