Levites

216 scripture references across 14 subtopics — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

God commanded Moses to consecrate the Levites as a special offering to serve in the tabernacle. The ceremony involved water purification, shaving, and washing of clothes—symbolic acts representing spiritual cleansing. The Levites were presented before the Lord and received through the laying on of hands, signifying the transfer of Israel's service obligation to them.

Key Scriptures

"Take the Levites from among the people of Israel and cleanse them" (Numbers 8:6, ESV). "And let them take a bull and its grain offering and a bull for a sin offering" (Numbers 8:8, ESV). "When you separate the Levites from among the people of Israel, the Levites shall be mine" (Numbers 8:14, ESV). "Thus you shall do to the Levites: sprinkle the water of purification upon them, and let them go with a razor over all their body" (Numbers 8:7, ESV).

Application

Believers today are called as a "royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9), requiring continual spiritual purification through God's Word as we dedicate ourselves to His service.
