Jabbok

0 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

At the Jabbok River, Jacob experienced one of Scripture's most pivotal spiritual encounters. After sending his family across the river for safety, Jacob spent the night wrestling with a man who was revealed to be God Himself. This wrestling match resulted in Jacob's hip being dislocated, yet he refused to release his opponent until receiving a blessing. God renamed him Israel, meaning "he struggles with God," marking his transformation from deceiver to one who prevails with God.

Key Scriptures

"So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man" (Genesis 32:24-25, NIV).

"Then the man said, 'Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome'" (Genesis 32:28, NIV).

Application

Believers can find encouragement in Jacob's example: persistent faith and wrestling with God in prayer leads to spiritual transformation and blessing.
