Jael

6 scripture references — Nave's Topical Bible

Overview

Jael was the wife of Heber the Kenite who lived during the time of Deborah and Barak's battle against Sisera's forces. When Sisera fled the battlefield, he sought refuge in Jael's tent. Though he was the commander of a powerful army, God used this woman to accomplish deliverance for Israel in a decisive moment of spiritual warfare and national liberation.

Key Scriptures

"Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, 'Turn aside, my lord; turn aside to me; do not be afraid.' So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a blanket" (Judges 4:18, ESV).

"Then Jael, Heber's wife, took a tent peg and took a hammer in her hand. She went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple until it went down into the ground while he was lying fast asleep from weariness. So he died" (Judges 4:21, ESV).

Application

Jael's example reminds us that God can use any believer, regardless of their status or position, to accomplish His sovereign purposes when we act with faith and courage.
