Zabdi

Zabdi was the name of several individuals in biblical history, most notably the grandfather of Achan who was executed for his sin at Ai. The name appears in genealogical records throughout Israel's history.

Overview

Zabdi appears multiple times in Scripture as the name of different individuals across Israel's history. The most notable Zabdi was the grandfather of Achan, whose family was implicated in the sin of taking devoted things at Jericho, resulting in Israel's defeat at Ai. Other Zabdis are mentioned in genealogical records of Benjamin and in administrative roles during David's reign.

Key Scriptures

"And Joshua said, 'Why have you troubled us? The Lord troubles you this day.' And all Israel stoned him with stones. And they burned him with fire and stoned him with stones" (Joshua 7:25, ESV). "So Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken" (Joshua 7:18, ESV). "Zabdi the son of Shimhi" (1 Chronicles 8:19, ESV).

Application

The account of Achan and Zabdi's family reminds believers that sin affects not only the individual but can have serious consequences for the entire community of faith, calling us to pursue holiness and integrity in our walk with God.
