Overview
A theocracy places God as the ultimate authority over civil and religious life. In the Old Testament, Israel functioned as God's theocratic kingdom, with laws given directly by God and leaders appointed to administer His will. The people covenanted to obey God's Word as their governing standard.

While God no longer establishes earthly theocracies, believers today submit to Christ's lordship and God's Word as the ultimate authority in all areas of life.
