Prognostication

Prognostication refers to foretelling future events through divination or occult practices, which Scripture condemns as contrary to faith in God's sovereignty. The Bible warns believers to avoid such practices and trust only in God's revealed Word.

Overview

Prognostication—the practice of predicting the future through divination, astrology, or other occult means—is consistently presented in Scripture as sinful and ineffective. God alone knows and controls the future, and seeking guidance through human prognostication reveals a lack of trust in His providence and Word.

Key Scriptures

"Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from what shall come upon you" (Isaiah 47:13, NKJV). This passage mockingly exposes the futility of those who attempt to predict the future through occult practices.

"When they say to you, 'Inquire of the mediums and the spiritists, who chirp and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God?'" (Isaiah 8:19, NASB).

"There shall not be found among you...one who practices divination or tells fortunes" (Deuteronomy 18:10, ESV).

Application

Believers should reject prognostication and all divination practices, instead seeking wisdom and guidance directly from God through prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel.
