Lust

Lust is an inordinate desire of the flesh that wars against the soul and leads to sin and death. Scripture warns believers to flee lustful desires and instead pursue righteousness, relying on God's grace to overcome temptation.

Overview

Lust originates from our sinful nature and represents a distortion of legitimate desires into selfish, destructive cravings. The Bible consistently warns that lust leads to conflict, shame, and spiritual death. God calls His people to mortify these desires through dependence on Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Key Scriptures

"But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death" (James 1:14-15, ESV).

"So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart" (2 Timothy 2:22, ESV).

"Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? Can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched?" (Proverbs 6:27-28, ESV).

Application

Guard your eyes and mind by establishing boundaries with media and relationships, and immediately flee situations that tempt you toward lust, remembering that God provides a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13).
