High Priest, the

The High Priest served as the chief mediator between God and Israel, and Jesus Christ fulfills this role perfectly as our eternal High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Overview

The High Priest held the most sacred office in Israel's worship system, entering the Holy of Holies once yearly on the Day of Atonement to make atonement for the people's sins. The Old Testament high priests were limited by their humanity and mortality, requiring successors. However, Jesus Christ is revealed in Hebrews as the ultimate High Priest who offered Himself as the perfect, once-for-all sacrifice and now intercedes for believers at God's right hand.
