Azriel was a leader ("head of their fathers' houses") of the Manassite clans living in Gilead and Bashan. During the reigns of Jotham and Jeroboam II, he led his people until Tiglath-pileser, king of Assyria, invaded and carried the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh into exile. Azriel thus represents the last generation of free Transjordan Israelites before their deportation to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the Gozan River.
