Who Was Archippus?
Archippus appears in two epistles written by the Apostle Paul, and though his mentions are brief, they reveal much about his character and commitment to Christ. In Colossians 4:17, Paul addresses him directly: "Tell Archippus: 'See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.'" This instruction suggests that Archippus held a recognized position of spiritual responsibility within the church community, likely serving at Colossae or a nearby congregation in Asia Minor. The warmth with which Paul writes indicates genuine affection and respect for this younger minister.
In Philemon 1:2, Paul mentions Archippus alongside Philemon and the church that meets in their home, identifying him as "our fellow soldier." This designation is significant—Paul uses the term "fellow soldier" only for those engaged in active, earnest spiritual warfare. It speaks to Archippus's dedication to gospel work and his willingness to endure hardship for Christ's sake. Though we know little of his specific duties, we understand he was deeply involved in ministry alongside others who were committed to advancing God's kingdom.
A Life Faithful in Service
What makes Archippus's story particularly moving is Paul's exhortation in Colossians 4:17. The Greek word translated "see to it" carries the sense of paying careful attention or taking heed. Paul is not suggesting Archippus had abandoned his work, but rather encouraging him to remain vigilant and complete what God had entrusted to him. This reflects the reality that faithful ministry requires ongoing intentionality; it is not something we can accomplish on autopilot or leave half-finished.
The fact that Paul felt compelled to publicly encourage Archippus shows pastoral wisdom. Sometimes believers grow weary in well-doing, not from lack of faith, but from the genuine weariness that comes with faithful service. By calling attention to Archippus's ministry before the whole congregation, Paul was publicly affirming his value and reminding him—and all who read these letters—that our work in the Lord matters eternally and deserves our complete devotion.
A Practical Encouragement for Us Today
Archippus reminds us that Christian faithfulness is neither glamorous nor always easy, yet it is always significant. Whether you serve in a highly visible role or labor quietly in the background of your church community, your ministry matters to God and to His kingdom. Like Archippus, you have received a calling that is uniquely yours, and God calls you to complete it with diligence and integrity.
Perhaps you feel weary in your service, questioning whether anyone notices or cares. Take heart from Archippus's story: the Apostle Paul noticed and cared enough to encourage. More importantly, Jesus Christ sees your faithful labor and will one day say, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Complete the ministry you have received in the Lord—not because others are watching, but because you serve the One who sees all and rewards all faithful work done unto His glory.
