The Headship of Christ: Foundation and Authority
Throughout Scripture, the apostle Paul emphasizes that Jesus Christ holds a unique and irreplaceable position as Head of the Church. In Ephesians 1:22-23, Paul writes that God "placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body." This headship is not merely honorary or symbolic; it is the living, active leadership through which Christ directs His people toward spiritual maturity and kingdom purposes. Christ's headship flows from His resurrection and ascension, where He was exalted "far above all rule and authority, power and dominion" (Ephesians 1:21). His authority over the Church is absolute because He has conquered sin and death, and all power in heaven and on earth has been given to Him (Matthew 28:18).
The nature of Christ's headship is deeply personal and relational. Unlike earthly leaders who govern from a distance, Christ is intimately connected to His Church. Colossians 1:18 declares that "He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy." This connection is so profound that Paul describes the Church as the "body of Christ," where individual believers are members who receive life, direction, and purpose from their Head. Christ's headship means He knows each of us, cares for us, and sustains us daily through the Holy Spirit's work in our lives.
A Sacrificial and Loving Headship
What makes Christ's headship distinctive and beautiful is that it is fundamentally sacrificial. In Ephesians 5:25-27, husbands are called to love their wives "just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless." This passage reveals that Christ's headship is characterized by self-giving love rather than domineering control. He shed His blood to purchase the Church (Acts 20:28) and continues working to sanctify and perfect His people.
As Head, Christ is actively developing the Church toward maturity. Ephesians 4:15-16 explains that as we grow in truth and love, we "will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." Christ's headship includes nourishing, guiding, and empowering every believer to fulfill their unique role in His body.
Living Under Christ's Headship Today
For Canadian believers, recognizing Christ's headship transforms how we live. It means submitting our plans, relationships, and decisions to His authority. When we acknowledge Jesus as Head, we trust that He knows what is best for our lives and our churches. This headship provides security: we are never abandoned, never beyond His care, and never without direction.
Practically, this means seeking Christ's wisdom through prayer and Scripture, allowing Him to guide our churches and families. It means recognizing that unity in the Church comes from our common submission to Christ as Head, transcending denominational and cultural differences. When we live under His headship, we experience the peace, purpose, and power that only Jesus can provide.
And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. — Ephesians 1:22-23
