Amasa

A nephew of King David (son of David’s sister Abigail) who served as commander of Absalom’s rebel army and was later reappointed by David, only to be murdered by Joab.

During Absalom’s rebellion, Amasa commanded the rebel forces against David’s army led by Joab. After Absalom’s defeat, David forgave Amasa and appointed him commander of his own army to replace the treacherous Joab. While pursuing the rebel Sheba, Joab met Amasa at Gibeon. Joab greeted him, saying “Art thou in health, my brother?”, then grabbed Amasa’s beard as if to kiss him, and stabbed him in the fifth rib with a hidden sword, leaving him wallowing in his blood.
