Achan

An Israelite from the tribe of Judah who disobeyed God’s command not to take plunder from Jericho, causing Israel to lose a subsequent battle at Ai.

God had commanded that all spoils of Jericho were to be devoted to the Lord’s treasury. Achan secretly took a beautiful Babylonian garment, silver, and gold and hid them in his tent. When Joshua sent 3,000 men to capture the small city of Ai, they were routed. God revealed that Israel had sinned. Achan and his entire family were stoned to death in the Valley of Achor, after which God turned from His anger and allowed Israel to conquer Ai.
