The Nature of Spiritual Armor
Throughout Scripture, armor serves as a powerful metaphor for the spiritual protection God provides to His people. Unlike physical armor that guards the body from earthly weapons, spiritual armor defends our hearts and minds from the schemes of darkness. The apostle Paul provides the most comprehensive teaching on this subject in Ephesians 6:10-18, where he encourages believers: "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil" (ESV).
Paul identifies six specific pieces of armor, each representing an essential element of our faith. The belt of truth holds everything together, reminding us that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. The breastplate of righteousness protects our hearts as we live holy lives devoted to Christ. Our feet are fitted with the gospel of peace, preparing us to share the good news wherever we go. The shield of faith extinguishes the fiery darts of doubt and temptation. The helmet of salvation assures us of our secure position in Christ. Finally, the sword of the Spirit—God's Word—is our only offensive weapon, the tool by which we combat spiritual darkness.
This imagery echoes throughout the Old Testament as well. David, facing Goliath, refused King Saul's armor, trusting instead in God's strength (1 Samuel 17:38-39). Isaiah declared that God "put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head" (Isaiah 59:17), demonstrating that God Himself is our ultimate armor.
Understanding Our True Enemy
Understanding armor requires understanding the nature of spiritual warfare. Paul reminds us that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12). This perspective shifts our focus from earthly conflicts to the deeper spiritual battles that underlie them.
Our enemy, Satan, is real and active, seeking to deceive, discourage, and destroy believers. However, we need not fear. John assures us that "the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world" (1 John 4:4). By clothing ourselves in God's armor daily through prayer, Scripture meditation, and obedience, we position ourselves for victory in Christ.
Putting On Armor Today
As Canadian believers living in an increasingly secular culture, we face real spiritual challenges. Doubt, materialism, loneliness, and moral compromise seek to undermine our faith. This is why Paul concludes his armor passage by emphasizing prayer: "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and petitions" (Ephesians 6:18). Putting on armor isn't a one-time event; it's a daily discipline of surrendering to Christ, immersing ourselves in His Word, and interceding for our families, churches, and nation.
As you face your week's battles, remember: you are not inadequate or unprotected. Stand firm in the Lord, dress yourself in His armor, and watch Him fight for you.
