Supererogation

Supererogation refers to works beyond what God requires, but Scripture teaches that believers cannot earn extra merit with God through deeds beyond obedience. Our righteousness comes through faith in Christ alone, not through exceeding God's commands.

Overview

The concept of supererogation—performing works beyond what is obligated—has no basis in biblical Christianity. God requires complete obedience and faith, and any works performed are simply the fulfillment of our duty as servants of Christ. We cannot accumulate spiritual merit or favor with God through extraordinary deeds.

Key Scriptures

"But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. None of the transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness that he has done he shall live" (Ezekiel 33:12, ESV).

"But when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty'" (Luke 17:10, ESV).

Application

Trust in Christ's finished work rather than attempting to gain God's favor through extraordinary religious deeds; faithful obedience to God's commands is the believer's only legitimate response.
