Shemariah

Shemariah was the name of at least two men in biblical history—one a mighty warrior who joined David, and another who divorced his foreign wife during Ezra's reformation.

Overview

Shemariah appears in the Old Testament as a name borne by faithful men of Israel during significant periods of Jewish history. One Shemariah was among David's mighty men, while another lived during the post-exilic period under Ezra's leadership. These individuals represent ordinary believers who participated in God's purposes during pivotal moments in Israel's story.

Key Scriptures

"Shemariah the Haruphite" joined David at Ziklag: "Shemariah also, and Jehiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite" (1 Chronicles 12:5, NASB). During Ezra's reform regarding foreign marriages: "Shemariah, Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph" (Ezra 10:32, ESV) and "Shemariah, Shemariah, Shemariah" among those who put away their wives (Ezra 10:41, NIV).

Application

These accounts remind us that faithfulness to God—whether in military service or moral obedience—characterizes those who truly follow Him, and our names are known to the Lord regardless of our prominence in history.
