Overview
Shelah was born to Judah and his Canaanite wife Shuah (Genesis 38:5). His story is intertwined with the account of Tamar, to whom he was promised in marriage according to the levirate custom, but Judah withheld him from her (Genesis 38:11, 14, 26). Despite this family failure, Shelah's line continued and became an important clan within Judah's tribe.
Key Scriptures
"And he had yet another son, and she named him Shelah. He was in Chezib when she bore him." (Genesis 38:5, ESV)
"Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, 'Remain a widow in your father's house, till Shelah my son grows up.'" (Genesis 38:11, ESV)
"The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah" (1 Chronicles 2:3, ESV)
Application
Shelah's narrative reminds believers that God's purposes continue despite human unfaithfulness, and encourages us to keep family commitments and honor our obligations to those in need.
