Overview
Shammua appears twice in Scripture as a faithful leader among God's people. First, he served as one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to survey the Promised Land. Later, he was among the priests who returned from Babylonian exile and helped restore worship in Jerusalem.
Key Scriptures
"These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. Now the name of the man from the tribe of Reuben was Shammua the son of Zaccur" (Numbers 13:4, ESV).
"And of the priests: Jedaiah, Joezer, Jachin, and Shammua was the leader of the house of his father" (Nehemiah 12:18, NASB).
Application
Shammua's faithful service across generations reminds us that God uses ordinary believers in significant roles, whether in exploration, leadership, or the restoration of His worship.
