Overview
In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul addresses the proper use of speaking in tongues within corporate worship. He distinguishes between tongues as prayer to God (14:2) and the need for interpretation when used publicly (14:5, 14:13). The primary concern is church edification: prophecy builds up the church directly, while tongues without interpretation only edify the speaker (14:4).
Key Scriptures
"For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit" (1 Corinthians 14:2, ESV).
"Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up" (1 Corinthians 14:5, ESV).
"Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret" (1 Corinthians 14:13, ESV).
Application
When exercising spiritual gifts in church, prioritize the edification of others and seek interpretation so the entire congregation benefits.
