Overview
Zuph was a region in the mountainous territory of Ephraim during the time of the judges and early monarchy. It served as the ancestral home of Samuel's family line and is mentioned in connection with Saul's search for his father's lost donkeys. The exact location remains uncertain, but it was clearly in the central hill country of Israel.
Key Scriptures
"There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah" (1 Samuel 1:1, ESV). "The sons of Samuel were Joel the firstborn and Abijah the second. They were judges in Beersheba" (1 Chronicles 6:28, ESV). "Saul said to his servant, 'Come, let us go back, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys and become anxious about us.' And the servant said to him, 'Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man held in honor; all that he says comes true'" (1 Samuel 9:5, ESV).
Application
Though Zuph fades from biblical narrative after Samuel's time, it reminds us that God works through ordinary places and families to accomplish His eternal purposes.
