Overview
Zippor was a Moabite king whose son Balak ruled during Israel's exodus from Egypt. When Israel approached Moab's territory, Balak feared their military strength and enlisted the prophet Balaam to curse them, hoping to weaken them before direct conflict. Though Zippor himself appears only in genealogical references, his lineage connects to one of Scripture's clearest demonstrations of God's protective power over His covenant people.
Key Scriptures
"Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel" (Numbers 22:4, ESV). "So Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor" (Numbers 22:5, ESV). "And Balak said to him, 'What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them instead'" (Numbers 23:11, ESV).
Application
Remember that no human scheme can thwart God's purposes for His people; trust His sovereignty even when circumstances appear threatening.
