Overview
Zephaniah served as a prophet during the reign of King Josiah of Judah (640-609 BC), a time of spiritual reformation. His name means "the Lord hides" or "the Lord protects," and he was uniquely a prophet of royal descent (Zephaniah 1:1). His message centered on the coming day of the Lord—a day of judgment against Judah's sin and the nations' wickedness, yet also a promise of restoration for the faithful remnant.
Key Scriptures
"The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah" (Zephaniah 1:1, NIV).
"Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the Lord's anger" (Zephaniah 2:3, NIV).
Application
In times of moral decline, believers are called to seek righteousness and humility, trusting that God protects His faithful remnant through judgment.
