Phalti

Phalti (also spelled Palti) was the man to whom King Saul gave his daughter Michal in marriage after David fled, demonstrating the political instability and family turmoil of Saul's reign.

Overview

Phalti son of Laish received Michal, King Saul's daughter and David's wife, as Saul attempted to distance David from the royal family and secure his own dynasty. This arrangement violated Michal's previous marriage covenant with David and illustrated the corruption of Saul's leadership. When David later became king, he demanded Michal's return, exposing the illegitimacy of Saul's actions.

Key Scriptures

"Then Saul gave his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, who was from Gallim" (1 Samuel 25:44, ESV).

"And her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, 'Go, return.' And he returned" (2 Samuel 3:16, ESV).

"The king took the ten women, his concubines, and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them" (2 Samuel 3:15, ESV).

Application

Phalti's story reminds us that earthly political power and human arrangements ultimately cannot override God's established covenants and purposes.
