Nisroch

Nisroch was an Assyrian god in whose temple King Sennacherib was assassinated by his own sons, fulfilling God's judgment against the blasphemous Assyrian king.

Overview

Nisroch was a deity worshipped in ancient Assyria, likely representing an eagle or bird of prey. The god is mentioned only in connection with King Sennacherib's death, when the proud Assyrian monarch was killed by his sons while worshipping in Nisroch's temple. This event demonstrated God's sovereignty over earthly powers and vindicated His word spoken through the prophet Isaiah.

Key Scriptures

"And as he was worshipping in the temple of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him down with the sword" (2 Kings 19:37, ESV).

"So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went home and lived at Nineveh. And as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, killed him with the sword" (Isaiah 37:37-38, ESV).

Application

Believers can take assurance that God judges pride and blasphemy, humbling even the mightiest earthly rulers who defy His name.
